Mesilla Valley tops Cobre
For the second time this week, the Lady SonBlazers were able to top the Cobre Lady Indians, 40-33 on Friday.
Jessica Rhodes lead all scorers with 15 on the night, while teammate Taylor Brown put down 11 points for Mesilla Valley. The win puts the Lady SonBlazers at 4-7 on the season.
The SonBlazers have experienced a rough patch over the past few seasons, having four coaches in four years. Brad Bailey, former Hatch head coach, was hired on this year and there’s been a slow, but steady improvement in the program. Look for the program to keep improving as Bailey gets his players into his system and increases their basketball knowledge.
Oñate smothers Deming
Another steadily improving program, the Oñate Knights put away the Lady ‘Cats on Saturday afternoon, 50-29. Lead by Kelsi Niehoff with 13 points, Oñate goes to 7-4 on the season.
The Lady Knights are participating in the LCPS Holiday Hoop-La beginning December 28th. Deming hosts Roswell on January 8, 2010.
Rio Grande over Rio Rancho
Bernadette Sanchez racked up 22 points, nine off three-pointers, in the battle of the Rios on Saturday afternoon. Outscoring Rio Rancho 20-7 in the first quarter, the Ravens were able to control the pace of the game with Sanchez’s shooting and teammate Monique Macias’ 18 points.
Rio Grande moves to 5-6 on the season, with Rio Rancho falling to 2-6. Look for the Lady Rams to participate in the Hoop-La tournament next week.
