News – March 5, 2010

An great night of basketball last night–not many surprises. Here are few things that did catch my eye.

The Cibola-Rio Grande game looked to be close one. The Journal is reporting that the RG head coach did not start his star shooting guard because of a  “strategic decision”. It boggles my mind why you wouldn’t start a player that can help you get to the next level and keep her out for the first three minutes. No complaints from Cibola for this egregious decision. Cougar Alex De La O had the shot to lift her team to the next level. Looking at the box, Cibola got exactly what they needed off the bench. Nice performance from Ashley Ward (14 pts) and Elyse Brewster (12 pts).

La Cueva shut down Mayfield’s three-point attack perfectly.

Eldorado: Yikes!

The final score in the Valley-Hobbs game: 60-19. Hobbs is a pretty good team and Valley ran past them with no problems. Valley played some great defense and had a strong showing from their bench. Angel Reyes lead all scorers with 20 points, followed by Jordan Gutierrez with 11. Watch out for the Vikes–if they can sustain this level of play, they will be are dangerous.

On the opposite end of the point differential spectrum, Manzano played Gallup much, much closer than I think anyone could have predicted. April Semler had 12 points, Caroline Lantor 11. Gallup’s Alannah Spencer lead the way for the Lady Bengals with 14 points.

Well one round down and three to go.First round recap Eldorado looks unstoppable.La Cueva finds a way to win even when they don’t look good.If only Cleveland could have put two halves together and they would be in the quarter finals.Manzano had a spell over the Bengals and the Bengals snapped out of it just in time.Las Cruces had it too easy.Rio Grande shot themselves in the foot and Cibola moves on.Hobbs met the Viking buzz saw and had a long bus ride home.Sandia size gets another team.
    Quarter finals-
Eldorado will end La Cueva’s run at a third title in a row!The Bengals will wake from the Monarch’s spell and take down the Wildcats! The Bulldawgs will be up for the challenge and take down the Cougars hopes of making it to the finals. And we have to have a cinderella and the Valley Vikings and Coach Harbin will make it right and send Sandia packing back to the gym and to get ready for next year.
    Semifinals-
Eldorado is on a roll and Kya will not let this one slip from her hands and even the Bengal faithful won’t be able to stop her and the Golden Eagles!
Las Cruces will have there hands full with the scramble defense that Valley will throw at them for a half but the Bulldawgs will not be denied to go to the PIT and play Eldo at 2:30pm.I originally had the Bengals in the Finals but the powers that be made them a 4TH seed.
    Finals-
    Eldorado vs Las Cruces
This time there won’t be Hobbs team to beat Eldo in a first round tournament. This will be challenge for Eldo to play against a well balanced team and a very good coach.Kya hasn’t been corralled all year except by the Zebras. The speed and pressure of Eldo will just be too much as well as the atmosphere of the PIT!
I’m sure I will be wrong as I am most of the time.I will say to you Rich “Thank You” for all your hard work on this site as it is ashame that no one uses it to get a conversation going about girls basketball in the state of New Mexico.Great Job and I hope to see everyone at the state tournament.
