Matt Abney

Matt AbneyBig Time Hoops Basketball is owned and operated by Matt Abney.  Abney is the head girls basketball coach at Las Cruces High and recently finished his third season.  In 2007-08 the Bulldawgs won their 1st district title in 12 seasons and also reached the state Final Four for the first time in school history.  In his first three seasons, his Bulldawgs have compiled a record of 53-30.  For his efforts, he was named District 3-5A Coach of the Year in 2006, 3-5A Co-Coach of the Year in 2007 and at the conclusion of the 2008 season, he was selected to coach the South All-Star team for the North/South All-Star game in Gallup, NM.

Originally from Las Vegas, NM, Abney started coaching at the middle school level in Las Cruces in 1991.  He was an assistant boys coach at Las Cruces High from 1992-1997.   He also spent one season (1998-99) as an assistant coach at New Mexico Highlands University.  Abney now lives in Las Cruces, NM with his wife Karen, and two daughters, Alyssa, (11) and Sarah (8).

For 13 years Big Time Hoops has been conducting Skills & Drills Camps, Shooting Clinics, and Ballhandling Clinics.  Over the years, nearly 1,700 student-athletes have participated in a Big Time Hoops Basketball event.

In the spring of 2003, Abney expanded to a high school basketball Showcase in order to provide exposure to girl’s basketball players.  In April of 2004, he conducted a boy’s Showcase as well.  Over 130 athletes that attended a Showcase have been offered a college scholarship, including 11 this spring.

Rich Chavez

BigTimeHoops.com is maintained by Rich Chavez, a native of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Professionally, Rich is the Manager of Product Development Services, a department in Information and Communications Technologies at New Mexico State University. There, he manages a group of talented web application developer and designers.

In his spare time as a photographer he shoots weddings, portraits, events and his passion, sports. Much of his work can be found on Big Time Hoops.

Rich also volunteers his photography and web development skills to Cowboys for Cancer Research and L.A.-based fusion guitarist, Chris Poland.

He is married to Sandra and has one son, Matthew.
