Matt Abney is entering his 10th season as the head coach of the Bulldawgs. Over the previous nine seasons Abney has built the LCHS basketball program into one of the finest in the state. In those nine seasons, his Bulldawgs have won two regular season District Championships while finishing Runners-up seven times. His 2008 and 2010 teams played their way to the State Final Four in Albuquerque. The 2010 team won a school record 26 games eclipsing the old mark of 23 set back in 1995. Coach Abney is the winningest coach in LCHS history with a record of 169-88. His district record during that time is 62-26. On three separate occasions (2006, 2007, 2010) he has been named district 3-5A Coach of the Year. After the completion of the 2008 State Final Four season he was selected to coach in the North/South All-Star game in Gallup, NM. Also, this past summer Coach Abney was a guest speaker at the 70th Annual New Mexico High School Coaches Association Coaching Clinic.
Not only have Coach Abney’s teams had tremendous success, many individual awards have been given to the Lady Bulldawgs as well. In nine seasons under the direction of the Coach Abney and his coaching staff, 31 players have made the All-District team. On four different occasions, a Bulldawg was named the District 3-5A Player of the Year. Also, in that time, there have been twelve south All-Stars, four All-State selections and nine different Bulldawgs that signed a college scholarship.
Prior to LCHS, Coach Abney spent many years coaching at Zia Middle School and Camino Real Middle School. Over his 11 seasons coaching both boys and girls, he compiled a record of 112-41 winning five City Championships. From 1992-1997 he was an assistant coach at LCHS under Mike Carr. In 1998, Coach Abney spent a year as a men’s assistant coach at New Mexico Highlands University while completing his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration.
Coach Abney and his wife Karen are natives of Las Vegas, NM. They have two daughters, Alyssa, 18 and Sarah, 15
